Before and After — Breeanna in Light

Composition and Processing

  • We had a lot of hard sunlight hitting most of the room by this time of day, so I wanted to find some way to soften it a bit and create an interesting gradient in the background.  So I pulled the window shades down to act as a background scrim, then placed a large white translucent panel directly between the sun and Breeanna.  That softened things quite a bit and made it look more like artificial light than the sun.

Before and After — Zion

Composition and Processing

  • I love the texture on this concrete wall.  The natural light is super soft at this location, bouncing off a cement floor and then a steel blue roof before hitting the subject.
  • I square cropped this to lose the floor.  There wasn’t anything wrong with it, I just liked the uniformity of the wall and didn’t want anything else to interrupt this background (particularly since Zion herself is drawing enough attention in the red dress).
  • I had Zion point her left hip out a bit to match the gaze, in effect creating two parallel (invisible) lines extending into the open space on the right.

Before and After — Fixing A Total Loss

Composition and Processing

  • I’m usually pretty good at just guessing the exposure settings I need for a shot, but every now and then I go ridiculously wide of the mark.  I kind of liked the pose in this photo though, so I thought it would be worth seeing how far I could take it in post.
  • Once I’d brought the exposure down as far as I could in Lightroom, I had to acknowledge there was information missing from parts of the arms and face that simply wasn’t there.  The key then was to make sure the stuff that was in range was actually pushed up further relative to the blown out spots so they’d look less blown out by comparison.
  • I sometimes like this sort of crop with lots of negative space, but it has a secondary purpose here.  As above, having a lot of the image blown out to white de-emphasizes the blown out skin areas, making them tolerable.
